This 1944 Ford 2N farm tractor is said to run and operate well after undergoing a nut-and-bolt disassembly and rebuild by N-Complete, a vintage tractor remanufacturer and parts supplier. The Model 2N was Ford’s second and final design with Harry Ferguson before the 1945 dissolution of their partnership. Described as unmodified and in correct specification, this example is being sold from the GMK Ford N Tractor Collection.

007

All production 2N tractors were painted in the dark grey hue seen covering the chassis, body panels and nearly every mechanical item here. Most unpainted fasteners appear new or refurbished, and paint looks glossy throughout. Ford went on to make the 8N and NAA tractor from 1948 forward.

012

The N-Series adopted Ferguson’s hydraulic three-point hitch system, which allows quick, single-person implement attachment and whose basic design is still in use on modern tractors. A variable track is achieved through adjustment of sliding front half-axles and reversible-offset rear wheels.

037

Many wartime 2Ns were equipped with all-steel wheels, but this one sports directional rear and single-rib front tires – they appear to have seen little use, but the fronts show some cracking from age.

034

Up top, a tidy array of simple controls shows little wear from the sprung steel operator’s seat wearing a modern padded cover. Optional items have been fitted including sealed-beam headlamps with intact “wing” mounts, a taillight, a pair of gauges and running boards to augment the operator’s foot pegs.

035

Less than five hours’ running time is on a rebuild of the tractor’s 120 cu. in. side-valve four-cylinder engine, which is said to run well. Sharing some parts with contemporary Ford cars and trucks, it works through a three-speed manual transmission and operates a Scotch yoke hydraulic pump and rear power takeoff.

014

A generator-supplied six-volt battery powers an electric starter and coil ignition, while the 12-quart cooling system uses an automotive-style fan and pressurized radiator. Fueling is from a simple updraft carburetor – a later-style oil cup has been fitted to its remote-mounted air filter. A signed certificate from N-complete is included in the tractor’s sale.
